I photographed Robert at Brewery Studios in downtown Los Angeles in 1992 for LA Style Magazine. Given complete creative freedom by the photo editor, I stepped onto the set knowing exactly how I wanted to capture his energy. Robert arrived entirely on his own—no entourage, no attitude, just pure creative curiosity.
When I pitched the concept for our first setup—a conceptual double-exposure captured on a Hasselblad camera—he caught on immediately, seamlessly diving into the frame. For the second setup, I invited him to experiment, and he immediately asked for a wig, which we quickly sent out for. He went full throttle, giving the lens his absolute best, uninhibited self. At the end of the session, we hugged and he left. To this day, he remains one of the warmest, sweetest, and most genuinely fun subjects I have ever had the pleasure to work with.
